Franconian specialities: a family tradition since 1580
Only a few restaurants in Würzburg manage to bring the full variety of Franconian cuisine to the table. Backöfele Würzburg is one of them. Here, tradition is not only cherished but lived. Our own family history is closely linked to local history. We proudly look back on an inn tradition that dates back to 1580. Our ancestors' family house in Leinach near Würzburg was endowed by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter and run as a village tavern and tithe cellar. To this day, the family owns a schnapps distillery there. In addition, there are our own vineyards with an annual yield of around 2,400 litres of Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau. Vinified dry: typically Franconian, of course.
Over 40 years of Backöfele Würzburg: a success story
Backöfele, too, keeps building bridges between tradition and modernity. In 1977 we opened the restaurant for Bavarian cuisine right in the heart of Würzburg. A former coffin joinery provided exactly the historic setting that still makes our restaurant so atmospheric and charming today. The "Schöpple" (a glass of Franconian wine) and the "Schmankerl" (local delicacies) are just as much at home here as the "best winemakers in Franconia". The culinary variety of our kitchen and our distinctive interior have long secured us one of the top spots in Würzburg's restaurant scene. Backöfele Würzburg has already been featured several times in specialist media such as Der Feinschmecker. In addition, the Marco Polo travel guide and Tripadvisor recommend us as a restaurant tip for Würzburg. In 1999, Backöfele Würzburg was honoured by the Allgemeine Hotel- und Gastronomie-Zeitung (AHGZ) as Concept of the Year. Hearty home-style dining: our cuisine
Like any other menu with a regional focus, Franconian cuisine has its very own characteristic influences. Backöfele Würzburg is regarded as a Franconian original for good reason. Here, people who are deeply rooted in the region run our restaurant and, as Franconian originals themselves, live up to our reputation. Since the very first day over 40 years ago, Herbert Gier has stood for good taste and consistently high quality. The same goes for his successor Henning Irl. With an eye for finely balanced ingredients, both offer our guests Franconian specialities at their finest. Lovers of meat dishes and vegetarians alike will find something on our menu.

By the way, all our dining rooms are air-conditioned, so you can happily stay a little longer even in warmer weather.
The courtyard: year-round cosiness under the open sky
Our courtyard invites you to linger outdoors. You can make yourself comfortable here even in winter. Where the green of our trees usually creates a beer garden feeling, candles provide a cosy glow in winter. The courtyard is fitted with an electronically controlled glass roof. Depending on the weather, you can look forward to a refreshing breeze or enjoy the romantic atmosphere under a seemingly open sky. Take a seat at long tables or small tables for two and make yourself comfortable with a Franconian wine or another speciality from our wine cellar or kitchen. On summer days, the large gate that closes off the courtyard is opened and gives our guests a warm welcome.
The main room: the heart of Franconian enjoyment
A Franconian original? You will certainly find it in our main room! In this characterful dining room, you can experience Franconian culture through and through. Our entire interior is reminiscent of the classic furnishings of traditional parlours and idyllic mountain huts: rustic wooden furniture with a touch of modernity thanks to well-chosen accessories. This room is very popular for celebrations because of its warm, welcoming atmosphere. The semi-open kitchen offers a first glimpse of the culinary variety. The large, open window leads out to the cosy courtyard. Order one of our Franconian specialities, reach for a glass of fine Franconian wine and indulge in traditional cosiness!
The taproom: a treasure chest of Franconian winemakers
The taproom is the jewel of Backöfele Würzburg. Here, a piece of history comes to life. The bar room takes you straight back to times long past, when many a winemaker might have been a regular here. In fact, a regulars' table in the old tradition has met here for 30 years. In what is probably the most original of all Franconian regulars' tables, newcomers are of course always welcome over a good glass of wine and a few tasty treats. Rustically furnished, with loving details that create a rich, typically Franconian atmosphere. And in the present day, too, the treasures of Franconia's best winemakers are kept at the copper bar. In the taproom of Backöfele Würzburg, it's all about seeing and being seen. In a figurative sense, too: this is where you will find the famous oven that gave Backöfele Würzburg its name.
The hunting room: sociable and quiet
“Welcome to the forester's lodge” could be written on the door of the hunting room. Things are a little quieter in this room than in the other, often livelier dining rooms. Here, pictures of traditional hunting scenes and a remarkable collection of antlers adorn the walls. The hunting room thus reflects a piece of our family history, because our senior owner, Mr Ehehalt, assembled the collection himself and made the room a favourite spot for everyone who prefers a little more seclusion. The hunting room at Backöfele Würzburg is particularly well suited to both company celebrations and private occasions.
The bakehouse: a haven of calm in the centre
Right in the middle of Backöfele Würzburg and still enjoying a little peace and quiet? Our bakehouse makes it possible. Smaller groups in particular appreciate this separate seating area. Whether it's a cosy evening with friends or family, a small celebration or a company event: the bakehouse is just the right place to linger a while. With an opulent mural, classic stylistic elements, such as the dark wood panelling and understated furniture, and lovingly chosen decorations, the bakehouse creates true Franconian cosiness.
