The Romantic Road starts here
Since 1950 the Romantic Road has run for around 460 kilometres through 29 towns, from Würzburg to Füssen. Start right in the Old Town: from CHASE Apartments it is a 13-minute walk to the Würzburg Residence, the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the beginning of the route.

From Würzburg the Romantic Road runs through the Tauber valley to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl, on to Augsburg and as far as Füssen at the edge of the Alps. Brown signs show the way.

Würzburg is not just the starting point, it is one of the highlights of the route. You can walk to these four sights from the front door.

Residence and Court Garden
The prince-bishops' palace was built from 1720 to plans by Balthasar Neumann and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The Court Church and the Court Garden are free to enter.

Old Main Bridge
Twelve Baroque statues of saints line the bridge. In the evening the city meets here for a Brückenschoppen, a glass of wine with a view of the fortress.

Marienberg Fortress
The prince-bishops resided here until 1719. Due to renovation the inner castle can only be seen on a guided tour, while the Echter courtyard, the viewpoints and the Museum für Franken are open.

Wine taverns
The Bürgerspital and the Juliusspital serve Franconian wine from their own vineyards in their taverns, and beneath the Residence the State Court Cellar leads tours through its cellars.

Take the A3 to Würzburg and from here follow the brown “Romantische Straße” signs. We have no parking of our own, but public car parks are close by.

From May to September the Romantic Road Coach offers day tours from Frankfurt or Würzburg, for example to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
